  Proviso West to Host Freshman Focus Night for Parents and Students on September 27, 2017

 
 

Mark your calendars for Freshman Focus Night on September 27!

Proviso West High School will host a Freshman Focus Night from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, in the Little Theater at Proviso West High School.  We look forward to sharing information with you about strategies for  student academic success and  information that will help ease the transition for freshman into high school. The freshman counseling team will discuss essential skills for students including time management, responsibility, self-advocacy,  and the resources and supports available for students and families.  Your attendance is vital to your student's success this year. Students are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting. Thank you for your support!

  Congratulations, PTHS D209 Graduates!

 
 

Proviso Township High School District 209 celebrated its commencement ceremonies honoring the Class of 2017 on Saturday May 20, 2017. Three ceremonies were held at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion to recognize Proviso East High School, Proviso West High School, and Proviso Math and Science Academy graduates.

Over 7,000 friends, families, teachers, and staff watched proudly as more than 800 students received their degrees. The ceremonies included speeches from school administrators, students, and keynote speakers Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Bridget Lewis, business strategist and Proviso East graduate.

The class of 2017 has earned over $30 million total this year and was accepted to over 100 different universities.

Class of 2017, thank you for contributing to the success of PTHS D209. You make us Proviso Proud and we encourage you to stand strong, continue to inspire, and make a meaningful difference in the world through empowerment and excellence.

  Proviso East Battle of the Bands Attracts Community

 
 

Community members filled the Proviso East High School football stadium bleachers on Saturday May 15, 2017 to show their pride by cheering on their favorite marching band during the 15TH Proviso East Annual Battle of the Bands. Mayor Edwenna Perkins of Maywood was among the guests and congratulated parents and students on their outstanding performances.

The lineup of marching bands included:

  • Oak Park High School (Oak Park, MI)
  • Proviso West High School
  • Mt. Auburn High School (Cincinnati, OH)
  • Mumford High School (Detroit, MI)
  • Dunbar High School (Chicago, IL)
  • Morgan Park High School (Chicago, IL)
  • Proviso East High School

Proviso West and Proviso East marching band students are proud of the annual tradition and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to showcase their talents.

  PTHS D.209 Honors Teachers During Teacher Appreciation Week

 
 

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 (PTHS D.209) celebrated all teachers the first week of May during Teacher Appreciation week.

On Monday, May 1, 2017, Superintendent of District 209 Jesse J. Rodriguez, Ph.D., began the celebrations by hosting a Teacher’s Breakfast at all buildings during PLC. Central Services administrators met with teachers at the schools and thanked them for their dedication and service to the school community. “I appreciate your commitment and contribution to the growth, development, and academic success of our students. Our primary goal at PTHS D.209 is to enhance academic achievement and we will continue to accomplish this as One Proviso,” said Dr. Rodriguez.

Each school held different activities throughout the week to honor their teachers.

  Dr. Rodriguez Shows Appreciation on Administrative Professionals' Day

 
 

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 (PTHS D.209) observed Administrative Professionals’ Day on April 26, 2017 to honor administrative personnel for their importance to the organization. The District 209 Superintendent Jesse J. Rodriguez, Ph.D., celebrated the day by inviting all PTHS D.209 administrative professionals to Central Services for a special lunch.

Proviso East and Proviso West high schools chauffeured their administrative professionals to Central Services for the celebratory event; a gesture that made many of them feel appreciated. Numerous administrative professionals thanked Dr. Rodriguez for taking the time to acknowledge their contributions to the District and expressed that this was the first time a Superintended had hosted this type of event.

  Proviso West NJROTC Cadets Celebrate at Annual Military Ball

 
 

The 15th Annual Proviso West NJROTC Military Ball was held on April 13, 2017, at the Ashton Place in Willowbrook.

The Proviso West NJROTC Military Ball is an annual gala affair that is planned and attended by the cadets. Male cadets dress in formal uniforms and female cadets may wear a formal dress. Cadets enjoy coming together as a team to celebrate ancient naval customs and traditions. Some of the highlights of this year’s ball included: a reception line, parading of the Military Ball Royal Court (as nominated by their peers), POW/MIA ceremonial readings, dinner, dancing, and music.

  PTHS D209 Community Forum

 
 

Superintendent of District 209 Jesse J. Rodriguez, Ph.D., invited community members to the Administration Building on April 20, 2017 to learn about the framework that outlines the long-term strategic plan for District 209. School principals and Central Services administrators also presented school and department plans.

The Administration Building’s auditorium was filled with approximately eighty participants and live stream video viewers (watch here) who enthusiastically waited to hear about the plan for PTHS D.209. The PMSA Gospel Choir opened the PTHS D.209 Community Forum with a performance under the direction of Mr. Matthew Brown. Dr. Rodriguez thanked the PMSA Gospel Choir for a wonderful performance and thanked all community leaders for their continuous contributions to the success of the Proviso school community.

  PTHS D209 Students Learn About College and Careers

 
 

On March 8, 2017 students, families, and community members had an opportunity to talk to college and career representatives about majors, financial aid, student life, admission requirements, scholarships and athletics at Proviso West High School during the “Own Your Future” College, Career and Community Transition fair.

The “Own Your Future” fair is part of PTHS D209’s efforts to provide students with meaningful experiences that enhance their college and career readiness.  Dr. Jesse J. Rodriguez, superintendent for PTHS D209, stated, “PTHS D209 is committed to empowering all students to meet the academic and career preparation demands that will allow them to be not just college and career ready, but also globally competitive.”

This fair was a cooperative effort between the PTHS D209 Department of Family and Student Engagement, our school counselors, the Melrose Park Community Alliance, Loyola School Based Health Center, Junior Achievement, and West 40.

  PTHS D209 Celebrates Black History Month

 
 

PTHS D209 students, teachers, and staff recognized African American historical figures and their achievements through a series of events that took place at each high schools. Some of the events included assemblies, walking tours, dance, music, and poetry.

The PMSA Black History Program was developed and presented by students who started planning for the program in November. The students met after school and worked collaboratively in groups to narrow down the items to be included in the program. The students ultimately decided on a program that highlighted and celebrated different events in each decade such as a Harlem Renaissance and a swing dance performance and a President Obama and the Black Lives Matter Movement presentation. The students presented an outstanding program on Monday, February 27th for parents and the community and Tuesday, February 28th for the student body.

  Proviso East and PMSA Students’ Artwork Displayed in Community Art Exhibits

 
 

Proviso East and PMSA High School artists had their work represented in two community art exhibits this past month. The Triton College Annual High School Show and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine’s Black History Month exhibition.

Triton College, in River Gove, held their reception on February 15th where all artists were honored. Proviso East had 27 participants including: Jala Reid, Cynthia Perra, Amari Johnson, Dominique Wallace, Javonte Dunbar, Kurt Sturgill, Daria Maritnez, Zahory Verdin, Chastity Williams, Jared Charo, Nayelli Mendoza Palomares, Jocelyn Gonzales, Elvin Cortez, Fatima Morales, Brian Barraza, Kevin Stoletto, Jonathan Reyes, Lillian Lopez, Kianna Walker, Gerrund Caffie, Gregorio Velazquez, Andy Miranda, Isabel Saucedo, Keisha Hood, Celeste Loya, Emmy Carpena, and Leila Tellez.

PMSA had 10 participants: Elena Buenrostro, Jailene MIreles , Justin Blaylock, Ariadna Perez-Davila, Cynthia Suaste, Nyah Peaches, Lucas Rosa, Melanie Hernandez, Jennifer Orozco and Van Ma.

  Proviso West Welcomes Class of 2021 on Future Panther Night

 
  Proviso West High School hosted its Future Panther Night for the Class of 2021 and their families on February 28, 2017. Event participants received a warm welcome from Mr. Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, the Proviso West marching band, and the Pantherettes.

Future Panthers and their families also went on tours, led by Proviso West students, and spent the evening learning about curriculum, honors and advanced placement, Project Lead the Way, career and technical education courses, scheduling, freshmen registration, and athletics and activities.

  Proviso West SADD Chapter Leads A “Not So Secret Agent Challenge”

 
 

On February 15, 2017, Proviso West High School hosted a "Not So Secret Agent Challenge," which gives the Illinois Students Against Destructive Decisions ("SADD") chapters an opportunity to partner with local State Farm agents to advocate against destructive decisions and help save lives.

SADD is a peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive driving. SAAD equips students with prevention tools to deal with the issues of underage drinking, drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions.

  PTHS D209 Celebrates National School Counseling Week 2017

 
 

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 celebrated the work of its school counselors February 6-10, 2017, during National School Counseling Week.

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), was designed to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems, and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career, according to ASCA.
