  Proviso West Graduates Mark Years of Achievement

 
 

Nearly 400 members of the Proviso West High School Class of 2015 marked four years of success and achievement at their commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 23, at the UIC Pavilion.

The 389 seniors at Proviso West graduated with pomp and circumstance during the ceremonies as they celebrated the successful completion of high school and thanked those who had helped them get there.

Breanna Liddell, the class valedictorian, said that she learned from the obstacles and setbacks that came during her high school years, and encouraged her fellow graduates to do the same.

  Proviso West NJROTC Named a Distinguished Unit With Honors

 
 

The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at Proviso West High School has been designated as a Distinguished Unit with honors for its area.

The Proviso West unit is part of Area Three, which includes schools from Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. This is the first time in its 12 year history that the program has been recognized in this way. As a distinguished unit with honors, Proviso West ranks as one of the best NJROTC units in the country. The unit continues to shine among area NJROTC units, having earned Distinguished Unit status in 2012 and Unit Achievement status in 2013 and 2014.

Our cadets earned this award based on their academic performance, their military drill, and their community service. The Distinguished Unit ribbon will be awarded to every cadet in the program for their outstanding efforts this year. The unit will also receive a ribbon that the unit guide-on will be able to carry this year at all the drill competitions.

  Proviso West Freshman Learn About Careers at Career Exploration Fair

 
 

Around 500 Proviso West High School freshmen had an opportunity to ignite their curiosity about different careers at the school’s Career Exploration Fair on May 7.

According to Ms. Kate Foster, college and career counselor at Proviso West, the career fair featured more than 30 industries including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers, information technology, public safety (EMT and Fire), marketing, finance, business, transportation, education, construction trades, various construction trades, landscape design and architecture, real estate, government, and health and human services as well as three branches of the military. There also were several guest speakers who discussed their careers.

The various careers represented at the fair are pathways that students can pursue through post-secondary training or education, Ms. Foster said.

  Incoming Freshmen Need Immunizations, Physicals Before First Day of School

 
 

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 will welcome back all students for the 2015-16 school year on August 17.

However, before reporting back to school, all students in the district must have at least a ninth-grade Illinois physical and up-to-date immunizations on file.

Parents need to ensure that their students’ physicals are complete and include details of the students’ health history. Parents also must answer all of the questions on the physical form, sign and date the form, and complete the diabetes screening questions that are attached.

  District 209 To Host District-Wide End-of-Year Celebration, Picnic on June 2

 
 

The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education will host a district-wide end-of-year celebration and picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, at Proviso East High School.

The celebration and picnic, which will be for faculty and staff from Proviso East High School, Proviso West High School, and Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, will be a way for the district to celebrate the successful completion of the school year, said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. It also will be an opportunity to set a positive tone for the next school year.

  District 209 Students: Sign Up for Summer School Now

 
 

Students in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 wishing to take summer school can register now.

Students wishing to take classes for summer school need to register before the end of the day on Friday, June 5, in order to take summer classes. Summer school classes will run from June 8 through July 9 from 8 a.m. to 1:10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Parents are encouraged to sign up their students for summer school as soon as possible to help with determining class sizes.

  Detour in Front of Proviso East to Continue Through End of School Year

 
 

Students, faculty, staff, parents, and other visitors to Proviso East High School, 807 South First Avenue in Maywood, will need to find an alternate route to the school beginning on Monday, April 20, due to construction.

The work will require the closing of First Avenue between Lake Street and Madison Street to through traffic, with traffic to be detoured. Northbound traffic on First Avenue will be detoured west on Madison Street to Fifth Avenue before heading east on Lake Street and continuing north on First Avenue. Southbound traffic will be detoured east on Lake Street to Fifth Avenue, heading south before going east on Madison Street and continuing south on First Avenue.
