  PTHS D209 Celebrates Black History Month

 
 

PTHS D209 students, teachers, and staff recognized African American historical figures and their achievements through a series of events that took place at each school. Some events included assemblies, walking museums, dance, music, and poetry.

The Proviso West High School African American Club sponsored a “Walking Museum.” From February 5 – 9, 2018, historian Tammy Gibson displayed an exhibit – as she dressed in character of a field hand. Ms. Gibson covered the history of slavery from 1700 until the Emancipation with artifacts from all around the world, as well as pictures of some of her archaeological digs with recent finds.

  Proviso West Hosts Battle of the Bands on March 24, 2018

 
 

 
  Celebrating Black History Month at Proviso West with the Driving for Your Dreams Literacy Tour!

 
  In honor of Black History Month, Proviso West was thrilled to welcome special guests from the Chicago Auto Show to the campus on Monday, February 12, 2018. In cooperation with the Kia Motors Corporation, the Driving for Your Dreams Literacy Tour engaged nearly 650 students in interactive sessions concerning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math), car-buying literacy, academic achievement, goal setting, and career planning.

Jeff Fortson, host and executive producer of SiriusXM’s Channel 141 weekly multicultural automotive show, "Auto Trends with JeffCars.com," led a series of sessions focusing on the car-buying process, sharing tips to encourage students to make sound financial decisions aligned to the goals they have for their future. Students also interacted with Brian Peterson, one of thirty minority car designers world-wide, as he shared his journey from being a student not unlike those at Proviso West, to finding success as a leader in an elite career field.

  Proviso West Artists Display Artwork at the Elmhurst College 19th Annual Art Exhibit

 
 

The artwork of forty-four Proviso West students was beautifully displayed at this year’s Elmhurst College Art Exhibit. The art exhibit took place from January 13 through January 23 to celebrate public school art programs from across the Chicagoland area.

Elmhurst College awarded certificates, ribbons and a $2,000 scholarship to students from each participating high school.

The Panthers took home 7 Ribbons. The artists winning recognition were:
Blue Ribbon for Excellence – Johnetta Crawford and Alexandra Henderson
Red Ribbon for Distinction – Dalia Alvarez and Elvia Mendoza
Yellow Ribbon for Judge’s Choice – Sky Guerra
Green Ribbon for Honors – Diana Gallegos
Purple Ribbon for the Special Award for Senior – J’Mya Buchanan*

*J’Mya has been awarded a $2000 talent scholarship to attend Elmhurst College in any art major.

Congratulations to all forty-four students and a big thank you to Mr. Shipley, Proviso West art instructor!

 
  Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board Update

 
 

The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board (SSAB) had a meeting at the District Office on January 26, 2018. During the meeting, students exchanged views on District 209’s uniform policy and decided to develop a survey to receive student, faculty, staff, and community input on the uniform policy before presenting a proposal. D209 administrators and students shared the uniform policy survey with the school community and will present the results during the next Board of Education Policy Committee.



 
  D209 Board of Education Hosts an After School Tea for All Proviso Employees

 
 

During the last week of January, the D209 Board of Education held its first Meet and Greet After School Tea for all Proviso employees. The Board of Education hosted an event at each of the schools in recognition of the excellent work that all faculty and staff have demonstrated.

Faculty and staff enjoyed refreshments, had meaningful conversations with Board members, and showed school spirit by proudly displaying the “Love is... Proviso D209” shirts that were a gift from the School Board.

The Board of Education thanks all Proviso employees for their dedication and commitment to transforming our schools and creating education pathways that lead to student success.

  School Environment Matters: Proviso Administers Sixth Illinois 5Essentials Survey to Improve Student Learning

 
 

PTHS District 209 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the sixth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. From December 5 through January 31, students, teachers and parents will be asked to take a 25-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. The survey results will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

  2017 Proviso West Holiday Basketball Tournament

 
 

The most spectacular Holiday Tournament in Illinois is about to happen. Proviso West continues its proud tradition by hosting the upcoming 57th Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament. The tournament will run all day December 27, 28, 29 and 30.

This special event is an ongoing source of community pride and honor. A number of dedicated community fans have attended the event for over 20 years, and continue to look forward to being present to witness the action during the holiday season. This event has showcased individuals who were destined for future success at the next level, and the list of talented individuals participating continues to be impressive again this year.

  NCAA Clearinghouse Presentation at Proviso West

 
 

November 29, 2017. In an effort to better prepare student-athletes for the college application and scholarship process, Proviso West Counselor Lynell Ingram facilitated an NCAA Eligibility presentation for the student athletes of Proviso West in conjunction with Northern Illinois University. Two presenters came out from NIU and delivered a comprehensive presentation detailing how student athletes qualify for athletic scholarship. They also informed students of the importance of registration with the NCAA (Clearinghouse) Eligibility Center. The importance of FAFSA completion was also stressed. The importance of ACT/SAT scores, Core course Grade Point Average and overall GPA was discussed thoroughly.

Dr. Blade, Ms. Foster, Ms. Washington and Mr. Davis were also present as more than 60 student athletes received the information in the Little Theater. This presentation is the beginning of what something we intend to continuously provide for our student-athletes here at Proviso West.

 
  PW Athlete Earns Scholarship

 
 

Proviso West High School Senior Girls Basketball star Jahnari Byrdlong signed a letter of intent to accept a scholarship from Tuskegee University on November 9, 2017. Tuskegee is an HBCU in Tuskegee Alabama. The school was founded by Booker T. Washington.

Jahnari signed the Letter of Intent for a $128,000 scholarship to play basketball at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee Alabama. The school is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II Program.

“Jahnari Byrdlong plays the off-guard position and is an excellent student who understands her opportunity and wants to make the most of it,” said Mr. Calvin Davis Proviso West Assistant Principal for Athletics and Activities.

We congratulate her, and wish her the very best of luck. D209 is proud of Jahnari.

 
  Proviso West Student Attends President’s Public Health Emergency Declaration

 
 

Proviso West High School senior, Luigi Miguel Cabantog, was one of three students to receive an invitation from Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to attend a briefing on the current opioid crisis by the President of the United States. Cabantog has served on the Board of the Illinois SAAD since 2015.

According to the organization’s website, SADD “works to empower teens, engage parents, mobilize communities, and change lives around the issues of traffic safety, substance abuse, and personal health and safety.”

Cabantog joined SAAD to inform his peers about the problems that exist in the community such as underage drinking, distracted driving and substance abuse that must be addressed.
