Proviso West Joins Fight Against World Hunger

Proviso West High School students have come together to join Terra Incognito Studios, The La Grange Business Association and participating La Grange businesses in the fight against hunger by supporting the international project, “Empty Bowls.”

The “Empty Bowls” project began in 1990. It was designed to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that help feed the homeless and fight poverty across the globe. Millions of people participate each year by making ceramic bowls and selling them for a fund raising meal. This year Proviso West students are making their own ceramic bowls to donate to the cause.

“This project is very unique,” said Proviso West Junior Onyebuchri Okusor. “There are a lot of poor people in the world, so it’s nice that we get to actually do something to help them and the community.”

So far, Proviso West students have crafted 20 original ceramic bowls, which they plan to donate for sale at $10 a piece. Proviso West High School is participating with Leyden High School and other potters to create over 500 bowls.

The bowls will go up for sale at the “Empty Bowls” fundraiser, at the Terra Incognito Studios and Gallery in LaGrange, Illinois on Thursday, November 13, from 6-9 PM.  Guests who purchase a bowl may take it to various restaurants in Le Grange such as: Corner Bakery, Knead, Trader Joe’s, Roly Poly, Caribou Coffee, and other participating restaurants for a free bowl of soup, pasta, or rice.

All proceeds from the event will go to the local food pantries in La Grange (Second Baptist Church and Saint Francis Xavier Church).
