Proviso West High School is home to some of the most talented singers, actors, artists, and performers of this generation. This summer the Goodman Theater is helping to foster that talent by welcoming five Proviso West students into their prestigious summer theater program.

Students from across the Chicagoland area competed to become a part of the Goodman Theater Summer Program which is designed to validate the voices of its participants, get them to examine their own potential for creativity, and introduce them to all elements of the creation of theater, both on stage and behind the scenes. Over 300 students auditioned. Eighty were selected with five of them coming from Proviso West. The students and their Drama Club sponsor say they look forward to what this summer program may bring.
“I love acting,” said Proviso West senior and program participant, Quinton Jones. “I was too shy at first, but being in Drama Club has helped me to overcome that. I can't wait to meet new people and learn new things. My lifelong dream is to become a great actor. I know I can make things happen at the Goodman.”
Proviso West Drama Club sponsor, Ms. Gillepsie said, “I am excited for our students to be able to showcase their talents on a stage outside of Proviso West. They are such big talents. The city can now share in that. At first they had no idea how big the Goodman Theatre was. When they walked in and saw some of the famous people associated with it, they realized how huge of an opportunity this was for them. I am beyond proud.”
The Goodman Theatre is a recipient of the Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. It is a leader in the American theater and is internationally recognized for its artists, productions, and educational programs. Goodman Theater’s summer program offers general theater studies to give students an opportunity to learn skills from local theater professionals that are instantly applicable not only to the world of theater, but also to their world at large. Students will have an opportunity to learn on the same stage as some of the greatest actors and actresses of their time.
Proviso West senior Shantel Lewis says the program is offering her a look into what is to come. “Ms. Gillespie is always telling us to look beyond the right now, and I can see myself on the Goodman Stage and on Broadway in the future.”
The program began on June 20 and continues until July 31st. Congratulations Panthers! We’re so proud of you!
