Proviso West NJROTC on Community Service Mission—Adopts a Highway/span>

Proviso West NJROTC is continuing in excellence through community service by participating in the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program.

AAH brings citizen volunteers into partnerships with IDOT to help pick up trash and keep community roadsides clean. The program also educates and encourages students to be more conscious of their environment. For Proviso West’s NJROTC, the Adopt-A-Highway program also gives them an opportunity to play a larger role in helping their community.

“This means a lot to us because it gives us an opportunity to step out and do some things we haven’t done before,” said PW Senior and NJROTC Chief Kevyn Evans. “This gives us an opportunity to do more community service and humanitarian work. Anything and everything we can do for the community is a big plus for us.”

PW NJROTC has been assigned to manage and beautify a two mile stretch of highway from Route IL 38 (US 12/20/45) (Manheim & Roosevelt) to Interstate 294 (West). NJROTC’s instructor, Chief Whitten, says joining this program is a part of NJROTC’s larger goal of helping to foster responsible citizens.

“These are the kids of the future,” said Whitten. “There is a misconception that we [NJROTC] are instructing kids to be military recruits, but really we want them to focus on leadership, values, and building their self-esteem. Supporting their community is a large part of that. So, we are working everyday to get them involved in community events, and we are encouraging them to help out wherever they can so that community members have an opportunity to see what we are all about.”

IDOT has placed an AAH sign between Wendy’s and McDonald’s in the Proviso West Panthers’ honor. The sign identifies Proviso West High School NJROTC as being responsible for that section of the highway.

Good Work NJROTC! We’re proud of you.
