Proviso West NJROTC Shines During Annual Inspection

Battalion, Aah-ten-hut! Proviso West NJROTC assembled as a remarkable military unit and passed their annual military inspection while presenting accomplishments and goals for the future.

PWHS's NJROTC consists of 335 students. The unit's goals as presented by Proviso West Senior and NJROTC Commander LaCandria Churchill are to: establish a unit tutoring program to raise the unit's GPA by the end of third quarter, have the drill team place in at least one event at two distinguished unit qualifiers, increase unit participation in parades, increase school support, and have a successful tutoring program that involves 35 percent of the senior class at Hillside School by 3rd quarter.

"Working hard to help the cadets succeed is very important," said Churchill. "This program [NJROTC] was established to produce responsible and successful citizens. So, my goal is to maximize the potential of every cadet in the unit."

Captain Julius C. "Jake" Washington, the Commanding Officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command Midwest, headquartered at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois served as reviewing officer at the annual formal inspection. Captain Washington encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their goals by continuing to make positive choices.

"I'm very proud of the commitment each of you has shown in joining JROTC," said Capt. Jake Washington, as he spoke with the students. "You have indeed made a wise decision. In NJROTC, you learn the value of good citizenship and service to our country.  These are the same skills you'll need in life. The Navy was my path to a positive future; it may or may not be the right choice for you. You can find success in life if you believe in yourself, make good decisions, and don't limit yourself."

Overall the sharpness and bearing of NJROTC students left a good impression on the 20+ year naval officer.

Washington commented, "Proviso West NJROTC is a source of pride for the high school and is making a tremendous positive impact on these young men and women."
