Proviso West’s NJROTC Unit will host the Naval Leadership Academy in June for future students and future cadets to help build student leadership skills, foster discipline, and to prepare students for leadership roles in their schools, NJROTC units, and beyond.
NJROTC students from across the country attend the academy. As head of one of the top NJROTC Units in the state, Proviso West’s Commander Jerry Egler will help facilitate training this year.
“The NJROTC Leadership Academy is a very demanding and challenging program that trains the best all around leaders,” said Proviso West’s NJROTC Commander Jerry Egler. “It promotes discipline, military bearing, physical fitness, and will help students develop basic military and leadership skills. Attending students will return as leaders in their units, and leaders in society.”
The AREA 3 NJROTC will host the Leadership Academy at the Naval Service Training Center (NSTC) in Great Lakes from June 19th-June 26th. Classes consist of physical fitness, practical leadership, advanced military drill, sailing, self-awareness, self discipline, goal setting, team building, and character building. During training students also participate in company challenges as well as academic challenges. Officials say, students are challenged mentally and physically during training, and students say it is a rewarding experience that only leads to growth and development. Proviso West junior Miguel Morales attended last year. He says the Academy gave him the tools to excel in NJROTC and beyond.
“Leadership Academy taught me a great deal,” said Morales. “It was just a great leadership experience. It was motivating, it gave me confidence, and I learned to communicate better with other people. I became more social and it helped me to become a better leader in academics, sports, and just all around.”
Cadets will be billeted on base in dormitory-style barracks. The cost per cadet will be $145.00, which covers berthing, meals, t-shirts, ball caps, etc. To learn more about NJROTC’s Leadership Academy contact Commander Egler at 708.202.6283 or via email at gegler@pths209.org.
