The Winning Team: PW Players Hope to Make Panther Football History

With less than two days until homecoming and two games away from a spot in the playoffs, the Proviso West Panthers Football Team has their eyes on the prize.

PW began the football season making history with a first time winning streak of 4-0. This caused officials to take a second look at this team of history makers. The win against the Dukes was their first since a 6-0 victory in 1991. Proviso West has only started the season with three consecutive victories two other times, in 1995 and 1965. The last time the Panthers were unbeaten through the first four weeks of the season was in 1961. And though the Panthers lost last week’s football game they certainly haven’t lost focus.

“It’s like Coach Hulbert always says, ‘dedication, desire, and discipline,’ that’s what it takes to win,” said Jesse Carrasco a PW senior who plays wide receiver and manages a 3.7 G.P.A. “We’ve come together and we’ve worked hard for this. We work together as a team, and we win as a team.”

Indeed they have. The Panthers are only two games away from claiming a spot in the 2009-2010 playoffs. Proviso West hasn’t been in the playoffs since 1974, but PW Senior and wide-receiver Julius Shelby, who also holds a three point plus G.P.A., isn’t worried.

“I think hard work is really starting to pay off for us,” said Shelby. “We’re just trying to stay focused and stay humble. This week is homecoming. We are two games away from the playoffs, and we’re going to get out there and get it done.”

Proviso West’s Homecoming festivities begin on October 3rd. The football team will face off with Downers Grove North. They fully intend to claim yet another victory.

Congratulations Panthers! And Good Luck! We’re Proud of You!
