PTHS 209 Scholars of Excellence: PW Football Players to Go On to Major Universities

Six Proviso West scholar athletes are taking their talent, skill, and love for the game on to higher learning institutions where they have each received full tuition football scholarships.

Proviso West senior Jevar Glover of Maywood and Julius Johnson of Bellwood both received full scholarships to St. Josephs University. Proviso West senior Jarret Moore of Bellwood received a full scholarship to North Park University.  Jeremy Robinson of Bellwood received a full scholarship to Robert Morris College. Proviso West senior Rasheen Lemon received a full scholarship to Northern Illinois University, and PMSA senior Malik Thurman received a full football scholarship to Ferris State University.

When the super six come together, they are like family. Each one is jovial and excited about the others’ success. Nonetheless, you can also pick up on the competition between them.  It may be that competitive spirit and their desire to be the best individually, that makes them come together in the classroom and on the field.  It has also paved the way for long sought after higher learning opportunities.

“It started in summer camp for us,” said Julius. “It took long practices, hard work, and a lot of dedication. We had the determination to do better than we did last year. We sacrificed a lot of free-time, and now to receive this scholarship—it’s a blessing.”

With G.P.A’s up to a 3.2 and athletic records in wrestling, football, track and field, the players say they used principles learned in athletics to help them excel in academics.

“This type of success comes with discipline and dedication,” said Jeremy. “You have to have dedication to the sport, and you have to have dedication to your school. You have to have the grades to play. So sports and academics go hand-in-hand. We worked hard in the classroom and on the field.”

Their coach on the field, Famous Hulbert, agreed that the students have worked hard. He hopes that their hard work inspires other students to stay on track.

“I’m proud of the fact that we have more guys getting scholarships than ever before,” said Coach Hulbert. “I can only hope that they serve as an example that if they work hard in the classroom, in the weight room, and on the field, they can also get these kinds of scholarships.”

For these scholarly athletes, the example they hope to set for their fellow teammates and underclassmen is simple.

“Never doubt yourself,” said Javar. “Never doubt yourself and always work hard even when you think people aren’t looking. That’s how champions are made.”

Congratulations Panthers! You are a vital part of Proviso Rising!
