Proviso West S.A.D.D. Club participates in Annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Pennies for Patients Program

SADD Club

Students at Proviso West are participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program, which raises funds to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma research, and for patient services. The program teaches students the value of helping others as they work for a good cause.

"This is my second year collecting for the Pennies for Patients campaign," said Jorgelina Jaquez, a Proviso West senior from Melrose Park. "I like knowing that I am helping to raise money to help cure a disease that affects so many, especially children. I came to this country two years ago from the Dominican Republic.  I knew many people who had leukemia there. I am happy to assist in a small way with finding a cure".

Since 1993, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students nationwide for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In Illinois, over $450,000 was raised in 2008 alone, including $640 by Proviso West clubs last year.

School administrators say they recognize the importance of having students work to help.

"Our students' involvement with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society reminds them of the importance of being involved with the community and helping those in need," said Karen Sassetti, S.A.D.D. Club Sponsor. "This is a wonderful program for us to take part in, and the expected results of our students' efforts will benefit an outstanding organization."

The Proviso West High School Pennies for Patients Program will run for a six week period from Jan. 12 to Feb. 20 2009. Clubs joining S.A.D.D. are: The National Honor Society, the African American Club, and Peer Mediation. The club collecting the most money in the school will receive a congratulatory party.
