Scholar of Excellence: Proviso West Student Receives Golden Apple Scholarship

Proviso West High School is home to many great scholars, and they have recently congratulated their newest Golden Apple Scholar. Proviso West senior Davinese Johnson has been chosen as one of 100 students in the state of Illinois to join the prestigious league of Golden Apple selects.

Over 1,000 students across the state of Illinois applied to become a Golden Apple Scholar. Golden Apple selects as many as 100 high school and college students each year from public and non-public schools and universities throughout Illinois. Nominees are asked to complete a written application, provide ACT scores, write several essays, and furnish transcripts to Golden Apple. From the completed applications, Golden Apple award-winning teachers choose finalists to be interviewed. They select a new group of students who each receive $23,000 in scholarship aid. The application process is rigorous and competitive. Only top applicants make the grade.

Johnson says the process was long and quite tedious, but she is happy that she stuck with it. She says it taught her a valuable lesson.

"I’m really excited," said Johnson. "I just couldn’t believe it. This whole experience has taught me that if you really want something, you have to go after it, work hard for it, and never give up."

Golden Apple Scholars receive tuition assistance. The funding is paid directly to the Scholar’s undergraduate institution. In return, Scholars pursue a bachelor’s degree from an Illinois university, obtain Illinois teacher certification, and teach in a school of need for at least five years. They also receive support and guidance throughout their careers.

Johnson’s mother, Phyliss Johnson, shed tears of pride and gratitude. She said that during rocky economic times, this scholarship means a more secure future for her Proviso West senior.

"I am beyond words," said Mrs. Johnson. "I’m crying tears of joy and I’m just so proud of her. With everything that is going on in this world, I’m so glad her father and I were blessed with such an angel. All the years of her life, we have been immensely proud of her. Her future is set as long as she stays focused on her goals. Despite everything that’s going on, we just want her to have ambition and know that she can reach any goal. With Davinese being awarded this scholarship, we know that a brighter day is coming. There is so much hope for the future of our child."

Johnson plans to attend Western Illinois University to major in early childhood education.

Congratulations Davinese! We’re so proud of you!
