Proviso West Students Highly Engaged with New Classroom Technology
Proviso West science students are highly engaged and spending more time on task using new integrated technology.
Proviso West’s science department is utilizing LabQuest which is considered one of the most powerful and intuitive interfaces for science education. PW science teachers are using this new equipment to help students grasp their science lessons.
“This device provides students with a different method of exploring science,” said Proviso West teacher Ms. Lucas-Duckins who uses LabQuest with her 9th grade biology students. “My students often work in teams. I love that the device gives them the freedom to inquire even if it takes them several attempts. They can repeat experiments and procedures as they experience the true meaning of exploring and developing theories. It also helps them to internalize the concepts. The device really enhances their learning experiences. They are able draw their own conclusions and experience how, as scientists, they too can derive their own future Nobel Peace Prize theories!”
LabQuest ultimately engages students with hands-on science in the classroom or in the field. Using this technology, Proviso West science students are analyzing graphs, changing scientific variables, and utilizing various sensors through a hand-held computer. The computer records the data. It then instantly generates graphs that can be manipulated in a variety of ways to help students make the visual and mathematical connections to the variable being studied. The equipment has built-in graphing and analysis software to help guide students during science lessons. Students say the new devices also make class time more fun.
“The device makes science fun because it helps us learn in more interesting ways instead of simply copying notes or using our books all the time,” said PW freshman Karina Bonilla.
PW freshman Dominique Woodson said, “LabQuest makes science even more fun because it involves more hands-on action. Instead of just sitting and reading, we actually get to feel the experience of a real scientist.”
Proviso West and Proviso East science departments have been equipped with the latest in science education technology. Science teachers say this is just one of many techniques being used to motivate students and get them more interested in science and exploration.
