Proviso West Teachers use the World Wide Web to Keep Students on Track

Proviso West science teachers came together to help keep students on track by creating a website that allows students to download lessons, catch up on assignments, take quizzes, and review their homework on the world-wide web.

“This was created so that our students can have access to class lectures, homework assignments, notes, and even some of the books online,” said science instructor John Wardisiani. Wardisiani helped develop the site with science department chair Darryl McDonald, and instructors Dr. Alvaro Serna and Rodney Noble.

“Using this site, students always have access to their class materials. Parents can also log in to get a snapshot of what is happening in the classroom,” said McDonald.

Wardisiani says that in one month the academic web page received about 1,000 hits, making it the “go to” source for parents, students, and other teachers. Science department teachers are using the website to further encourage collaboration, common assessments and continued curriculum development. Sister schools are also using the sites as a resource for supplemental materials.

“These teachers are phenomenal,” said PW Principal Alexis Wallace. “What they have created benefits our students, our parents, and our teachers. This has had a positive impact on our school. It has improved the way we support our students and enhanced our efforts to keep everyone on track.”

Students say that so far this year, the new website has been a great help.

“The website is really helpful because we can log on to get information on our grades and if we are missing an assignment we can get it from there,” said PW sophomore Samone Davis. “Parents can access it, and it’s not that time consuming.”

At this month’s Board of Education meeting the team of three were commended by Proviso West Principal Alexis Wallace, and recognized by the PTHS 209 Board of Education for their hard work, innovation, and commitment to students’ success.

Science teachers are still building on the site. They hope to make it functional across all disciplines so that students not only have access to science online, but math and English as well.
