Proviso West High School Library Media Center

Department Chair: Ric Lindahl
Library Secretary: Patricia Amodeo

Mission:
Our mission is to serve the students and staff of Proviso West High School by supporting the curriculum and life-long learning. Access to the full range of information resources and services through the library media program is fundamental to learning.
In order to realize our mission our goals include:

  1. To provide resources that support the curriculum and that stimulate intellectual curiosity.
  2. To support the learning of all students and other members of the learning community who have diverse learning abilities, styles, and needs.
  3. To provide instruction in information literacy, striving for independent use and knowledge of available resources.
  4. To work with faculty to develop resource-based curriculum assignments and specific lessons.

Visiting the library - Students:
Students may visit the library before and after school, during any free period, or during a lunch on a pass. When you visit we ask that you observe four rules:

  1. Please keep your voices low. The library is a very big and often busy place. Voices tend to carry.
  2. There can be no eating or drinking in the library. This includes water bottles. Please keep these items in your backpack as they are incompatible with books and computers.
  3. Table seating is limited to four to a table, unless your group obtains special permission from the librarian.
  4. The library is part of the school.  The rules of the school apply within the library.

Visiting the library - Teachers and Classes:
Classes visiting the library need to be arranged in advance. The library can normally accommodate up to three classes per period. One class on the computers, one in the South Library and another in the Main Library. To avoid disappointment, it is best to sign up as soon as possible, especially if we need to put materials on reserve for your students. When you sign up, it is helpful to have a copy of the assignment for the librarian and let the librarian know if you need any special materials or instruction. Contact Mrs. Krecun or Mrs. Gaughan at ext. 6308 or 6350 to schedule your classes.
